Project Overview
We set out to develop an identity for an online gaming community website. The name already existed, we just needed to jump start the thing with a new logo, website design and then integrate it into a new content management system. How hard could that be?
The Challenge
When I joined the great group of guys at Game|Gravity (say that five times fast) the site was a generic theme slapped on a shady content management system. Needless to say, I had a lot of work to do to get the site up to par. The gaming community is a strange beast in that its a huge demographic of men, women, boys and girls.
Working with the management at G|G, we developed a list of features we wanted the site to have and how it should be presented to them. Most of these things are trial and error and seeing how members of competitor sites reacted to similar ideas.
The Solution
The head of the company, Steven Wade, developed the site architecture proposal and sent it to me to base my work off of. I designed a clean and content-heavy block style website that's easy to update and is very very fast compared to the last design.
I coded the site in standard-complient XHTML and CSS as well as MooTools and other JavaScript snippets. The team then sent what I had created to a set of Drupal developers to integrate the theme into a different (and more powerful) content management system and create all the necessary modules and sections that the site would use.
